STAFFORD LOAN

The maximum Stafford Loan amount that you can receive is based on your grade level and status as a student.  Independent students may be eligible to borrow more because they are paying for college without assistance from their family.

Dependency status is still determined by the school, even though the student is financing their education on their own.

Dependent Undergraduate students (except students whose parents are unable to obtain PLUS Loans) each year can borrow up to:

Year 1:  $5,500 - if you're a first-year student enrolled in a program of study that is at least a full academic year.  No more than $3,500 of this amount may be in subsidized loans.
